A square plate gives a dish clean lines and corners to plate into, and it is the shape most associated with modern plating. It is also the shape that chips first and fits dishwasher racks worst, so square plates are not a drop-in replacement for round ones of the same width.

Before committing, check the three things that catch kitchens out: whether the corners clear your dishwasher racks, whether the plates stack straight, and whether they fit the table alongside the glassware and cutlery.

They sit with round plates and oval plates in the dinnerware plates range, and pair with slate and wooden serving boards and cast iron sizzlers for mixed presentation.

Costing a menu change onto squares? The price guide lists plate dimensions corner to corner, which is the measurement that decides whether they rack.

These are the top FAQs for Square Plates

Why do square plates chip more?

Corners. A corner concentrates any impact into a small area and it is the part most likely to catch another plate, a rack wall or a bench edge. On a round plate that force is spread along a curve.

Expect a higher replacement rate than round and buy the allowance up front. Rounded-corner squares are a middle ground worth looking at.

Will square plates fit my dishwasher racks?

Not always, and this is the main reason venues regret the switch. Racks built for round plates space the pegs for a circle, and square corners either will not drop in or sit at an angle and knock.

Measure corner to corner, not edge to edge. Open or adjustable racks from the commercial dishwasher racks range usually solve it.

How much usable plating area do I get?

Less than the width suggests, because the corners are rarely usable for food — a sauce run into a corner is hard to eat and looks untidy. The practical plating area is closer to the inscribed circle.

Plate a real dish on a sample before ordering. Many kitchens end up buying a size larger than they expected.

Do squares work with round bowls and plates?

They can, and a deliberate mix of one square element with round ones reads as designed. What does not work is squares and rounds in the same glaze and size on the same table, which reads as a shortage.

Keep the mix intentional and consistent per course. Match glaze across the crockery range rather than shape.

How do square plates stack and store?

They need aligning, and a stack that is not aligned leans and chips. Unlike round plates, they will not self-centre as they are added to a stack in a hurry.

Keep the stacks short and square them up when restocking. Modular shelving set to plate height gives you more short stacks instead of fewer tall ones.

Do they fit on a cafe table with a full setting?

A square takes more of the table than a round of the same nominal size, because the corners project into the space you wanted for glassware and cutlery. On small tables that is a real constraint.

Lay a full setting on your actual table before ordering. The cafe tables and rectangular cafe tables ranges are the other half of the decision.
