A coffee grind bin sits beside the group head and takes the spent puck in one knock. Without one the basket gets tapped into a rubbish bin under the bench, which slows every shot and leaves grounds across the floor. That is what a coffee grind waste bin is for.

The same thing is sold as a coffee puck bin, a knock bin coffee accessory, a coffee knock bin, a coffee grinds knock box, a knock bin, a coffee dump bin, a coffee tamper bin or simply a grind bin. Our coffee knock bins sit with the rest of the coffee machine accessories and the wider commercial coffee equipment range.

These are the top FAQs for Coffee Knock Bins

Benchtop or in-counter knock box?

A benchtop bin needs no joinery and moves with the bench layout. An in-counter version drops through the bench top into a drawer or bin below, which is tidier but has to be cut in.

Default to a benchtop model unless the bench is being built now; our fitout team can plan a cut-in.

How often does a knock bin need emptying?

At least once a shift in a busy cafe, and more if you are pulling continuously. Grounds compact and ferment, which smells and makes the bin heavier than staff expect.

Keep a lined kitchen rubbish bin within reach so emptying is one movement.

Where should the knock bin sit on the bench?

Between the grinder and the group head, on the barista's non-dominant side, so the basket knocks out on the way back to the grinder. Anywhere else adds a step to every shot.

The same logic applies to the tamper and the milk jugs.

What should a knock bin be made of?

A stainless steel body with a removable rubber or silicone knock bar. 304 stainless steel is the food-safety grade used in Australian commercial kitchens, and the soft bar is what protects the basket rim.

See the wider stainless steel equipment range for benches and shelving in the same grade.

Will knocking out damage the basket?

Not against a proper soft knock bar. Knocking a basket on a hard rim or a steel bin edge is what dents it, and a dented basket channels the shot.

Replacement baskets and bars go through our spare parts request form.

Can coffee grounds go down the sink?

No. Grounds set in a trap and are a common cause of blocked cafe plumbing, which is the practical reason every bar has a knock bin.

Keep the grounds dry in the bin and out of the kitchen sink.

What else belongs on a coffee bench?

A grinder, a tamper, jugs, a plunger for batch and a jug rinser if the bench is plumbed.

See commercial coffee grinders, coffee tampers, milk frothing jugs and jug rinsers.
