An ambient food display puts food on the counter at room temperature where customers can see it, behind glass or perspex. Pastries, sandwiches, slices and anything else that does not need to be held cold or hot go in one, and the cabinet keeps hands, dust and breath off the stock while people decide. Cafes, restaurants, bakeries and delis all run them.

Our ambient display cabinets include small countertop boxes for the space beside the till up to large freestanding units that make up a display line, so you can buy the size that suits your business at its current size, then add more as the counter grows. Many have adjustable shelves, and some have sliding doors so staff or customers can reach in. You will find the brands we would use ourselves, delivered anywhere in Australia.

These are the top FAQs for Ambient Food Displays

What types are there?

Compact countertop models for the impulse buy beside the till, and large freestanding units that stand on their own. A freestanding unit can sit in a display line alongside your heated and cold cabinets, or you can go as simple as a perspex box on the counter.

The materials depend on the unit — some are glass, some are perspex. Many have adjustable shelves, so you can change the way food is laid out as the menu changes through the year, and some have sliding doors for serving and packing.

Do they suit a bakery or cafe?

Yes. Pastries, sandwiches and baked goods that sit at room temperature are what these are for.

Pies and anything served hot need a hot food display instead, and cakes that have to be kept cold or at a set humidity need cake display fridges. Plenty of counters run all three side by side, one for each part of the menu.

Do they keep food fresh?

No — an ambient cabinet does not change the temperature of what is in it, so it does not make food last longer. What it does is keep the stock covered: no customers touching it, no breathing on it, nothing settling on it from the room.

That is why anything with a short life out of refrigeration belongs in a chilled cabinet, and anything shelf-stable is fine here.

Is there something for a small counter?

Yes. The ambient end of our food displays range includes plenty for cafes and bakeries short of bench. A multi-shelf countertop unit gets more stock into the same footprint, and a narrower triple-shelf model leaves more counter free while still holding a day's baked goods and lunch items.

What are they made of?

The framing on ambient food display units is stainless steel and the glass is tempered or toughened, which is what stands up to doors opening and closing all day. The simplest countertop boxes are perspex instead. Each product page states which.

Do they use less power than a fridge?

They need no refrigeration at all, which is the saving against a countertop display fridge. That is the whole case for them where the food does not need cooling.

The other side of it is just as plain: anything that has to be held cold, or at a set humidity, cannot go in an ambient cabinet. Work out which part of your menu is shelf-stable, display that here, and put the rest in refrigeration.

How long does delivery take?

We deliver anywhere in the country. Our delivery information page covers timings.

If the model you want is out of stock, contact our support team. We can either suggest an alternative in the same price range or tell you when yours is back in.

How do I clean one?

At the end of each shift, clear out any remaining stock and store or dispose of it. Wipe the shelves down to get the crumbs off, then sanitise, then go over them again with a clean damp cloth so no residue is left, and let them dry.

Glass gets a glass cleaner at the same time, which is what keeps the fingerprints and smears off the front of your display.

Do they arrive assembled?

Most do, and those are ready to use once they have been cleaned. The ones that need putting together are usually the smaller countertop units, and they come as a few pieces that go together on site.
