Tropical freezers are rated to hold temperature in high heat and humidity, which is what a standard cabinet struggles with in a Queensland kitchen, an unairconditioned store room or a tin-roofed shed in summer.

The rating refers to the ambient conditions the unit is tested in, not the temperature inside. Put a thermometer where the freezer is going and read it at the worst time of the worst month, then compare that against the rating on the product page. Our tropical freezers include small under counter cabinets for a bar or a service point up to large upright freezers for a production kitchen, so you can buy the size that suits your business at its current size, then size up as your business grows. See commercial upright freezers and commercial under counter freezers for the formats.

These are the top FAQs for Tropical Freezers

What does a tropical rating actually mean?

It means the cabinet is tested to hold its internal temperature at a higher ambient temperature and humidity than a standard unit. The class is listed on each product page.

Chilled equivalents are in tropical fridges.

Do I need one in southern states?

Usually not for an air-conditioned kitchen, but a hot back room or an outdoor store area in a Melbourne summer can still push a standard cabinet past its rating.

Compare against standard commercial freezers.

What happens if a standard freezer is used in a hot room?

It runs constantly, struggles to hold temperature and wears out early. The warranty may also exclude use outside the rated ambient conditions.

Check the rating before buying.

Manual or automatic defrost?

Automatic defrost saves labour and keeps performance steady, which matters in a busy kitchen. Manual defrost units cost less and suit freezers that are opened rarely.

Either way, ice build-up means a seal or airflow problem rather than a defrost problem.

How do I know when a door seal needs replacing?

Look for ice building around the door, condensation on the frame, or a seal that no longer grips paper closed in the door. A failing seal makes the compressor run constantly and frosts the cabinet.

Seals are replaceable on most cabinets, and it is the cheapest repair there is.

Do tropical units cost more to run?

They are built to work harder in heat, and in a hot room they will still run less than an underrated cabinet failing to keep up.
