Kraft paper bags carry the takeaway order out the door, and they are the one piece of packaging the customer definitely handles. A bag that splits in a car park is remembered.

A kraft paper bag is judged on paper weight, whether the base is gusseted or flat, and the handle. Disposable paper bags with twisted handles carry more than flat-handled ones; a bag with no handle is for over-the-counter work only.

Bags are the last thing packed, so they have to suit what goes in: takeaway containers, disposable cups in a carrier, and cutlery on top. The rest of the kitchen disposables range covers the layers underneath.

Settling on bag sizes and handle types before the next bulk order? The price guide lists the kraft paper bags together, so you can match a size to each order you send out.

These are the top FAQs for Kraft Paper Bags

Why is kraft paper used for takeaway bags?

Kraft is a strong, long-fibre paper that holds weight without needing a coating, which is what lets a paper bag replace plastic for a hot order. It also takes print well without lamination.

The brown colour is simply unbleached kraft. A white kraft bag is the same paper bleached, with much the same strength.

Flat handle, twisted handle or no handle?

Twisted paper handles carry the most and are the right choice for a full meal order. Flat tape handles are cheaper and suit lighter loads. No handle suits a counter bag that goes straight into another bag or a hand.

The handle is usually the first thing to fail, so match it to the heaviest order you send out rather than the average one. Pair heavier orders with a rigid takeaway container so the weight is shared rather than hanging off the handle.

Will a paper bag hold a hot, greasy order?

A heavier-weight bag will, and the grease marking is cosmetic rather than structural. A light bag will weaken where the oil sits, usually at the base corner.

The real fix is upstream: well-drained food and a vented container means less oil reaching the bag. Frying baskets and a clean fryer matter more here than the bag does.

Do they work for cold or wet items?

Less well. Condensation from a cold drink or a chilled salad softens paper, so cold orders travel better in a bag with a liner or in plastic.

If a venue sends both, holding two bag types is cheaper than one bag that fails half the time. For drinks, a carrier inside the bag stops the wet contact entirely — see disposable cups and dispensers.

Can kraft paper bags be printed or branded?

Yes, and kraft takes a one or two-colour print well without any coating. A custom print is a production run with a lead time rather than a shelf item.

A cheaper middle ground is a plain bag with a sticker, which also lets you change the message without a new run. Our brands page lists the suppliers we work with on packaging.

How should bags be stored at the counter?

Flat, dry and in a slot or rack rather than a pile, so one comes out without dragging three with it. Paper creases permanently and a creased bag looks second-hand.

Keep the bulk cartons on modular shelving away from the wash-up, and only bring a working stack to the pass.

Are kraft paper bags recyclable?

Plain, unlined kraft is one of the easier packaging lines to recycle, and that is a large part of its appeal over plastic. A laminated or window bag is a different question and the product page states it.

A grease-soaked bag goes to organics or general waste rather than paper recycling. Having both bins at the front of house is what makes the difference — see rubbish bins and the eco friendly disposables range.
