A 40 litre hot water urn heats and holds hot water so staff pour tea and coffee straight from a tap instead of boiling kettles. It is the largest size we stock, and a 40l hot water urn holds around 160 cups at 250 ml, so one fill covers a very large sitting: clubs, caterers and conference venues buy this size when nothing smaller keeps up.

It is also listed as a 40 litre tea urn or a 40l tea urn. Before you commit to a tank this size, compare it against running two 20 litre urns or a 30 litre urn, and see the whole commercial hot water urns range.

These are the top FAQs for 40 Litre Hot Water Urn

Is one 40 litre urn better than two 20 litre urns?

One tank is less to clean, store and plug in. Two give you a spare if one fails mid-service, let you hold two temperatures and spread the electrical load across circuits.

Most large venues we deal with end up with a big urn at base plus a smaller portable one for offsite work.

What are the practical limits of a tank this size?

Weight, heat-up time and bench space, in that order. Full it cannot be lifted, it takes the longest to come to temperature, and it needs clear space above for the lid.

Plan the position before it arrives rather than after; see our delivery information for access requirements.

Does a 40 litre urn plug into a normal socket?

Often not. At this capacity the electrical requirement commonly exceeds a standard outlet, and some units are hardwired. Read the rating on the product page and have the site checked.

Our appliance installation page explains how we handle that.

Can it be used as a self-serve station?

Yes, with a spring-return tap, a deep drip tray and the tap clear of the bench edge. Keep the cup stack to one side so guests are not reaching over the tap.

Disposable cups and dispensers and a rubbish bin complete the station.

How do I clean a tank I cannot tip out?

Drain it through the tap, wash the interior with a mild detergent on a long-handled brush, rinse through the tap again and leave the lid off to dry.

Descale on a schedule in hard-water areas. Products are in commercial kitchen cleaning supplies.

What material should a large urn be?

304 stainless steel throughout. It is the food-safety grade used in Australian commercial kitchens, holds heat and tolerates constant cleaning, which matters more the bigger the tank gets.

See the wider stainless steel equipment range for benches and shelving in the same grade.

Is there a cheaper way into equipment this size?

If the outlay is the issue rather than the need, renting first spreads it out and lets you confirm the size works before you commit.
